Blessed Esther Paniagua Alonso was born on 7 June 1949 in Izagre, León, Spain. She was the daughter of Dolores Alonso and Nicasio Paniagua. From a young age, Esther displayed a deep devotion to her faith, and this faith ultimately led her to a life of service and martyrdom.

At the age of 18, Esther joined the Augustinian Missionary Congregation and professed her perpetual vows in August 1970. She dedicated her life to God and committed herself to the mission of spreading the love of Christ to those in need. With a compassionate heart and a desire to care for others, Esther pursued nursing training.

In a providential turn of events, Esther was assigned to work at a hospital in the Bab El Oued neighborhood of Algiers, Algeria. It was here that she developed a special affinity for handicapped children, feeling particularly drawn to their unique needs and challenges. Her love and care for these children shone through, as she served them with great dedication and tenderness.

During her time in Algiers, Esther also grew to appreciate the Arab people and their rich culture. She immersed herself in the community, eagerly learning their language and customs. This allowed her to connect with the local population on a deeper level, fostering understanding and building bridges of friendship.

Tragically, Esther's life was cut short by an act of violence. On Sunday, 23 October 1994, while walking to Mass, she was ambushed and shot three times in the head by members of the Armed Islamic Group. Her martyrdom was a testament to her unwavering faith and commitment to serve others, even in the face of danger.

Her murder shook the community and was met with widespread grief. However, Esther's sacrifice and martyrdom also became a source of inspiration for many, as her life reflected the epitome of selflessness and love. Her memory, faith, and courageous witness continue to resonate with countless individuals around the world.

Recognizing the extraordinary sanctity of Esther's life and her willingness to sacrifice everything for her faith, Pope Francis declared her venerable on 26 January 2018. Furthermore, on 8 December 2018, Pope Francis beatified Esther Paniagua Alonso, placing her among the blessed of the Catholic Church.
