Biography

Blessed Esteban Anuncibay Letona, also known as Brother Ovidio Bertrán, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and is revered as a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 26 December 1892 in Mijancas, a village in Vitoria, Spain.

Brother Ovidio Bertrán dedicated his life to education and was known for his commitment to teaching young students. As a Christian brother, he embraced the values of the Franciscan tradition and shared his passion for education with the children under his care.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Ovidio Bertrán faithfully stood by his religious beliefs despite the growing tensions and persecutions against the Catholic Church. He refused to renounce his faith, standing as a steadfast witness to his beliefs and ideals.

On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Blessed Esteban Anuncibay Letona, shining a spotlight on his life and martyrdom as an inspiration for Catholics worldwide.
