In 1084, Erfo was chosen as the bishop of Münster, a position he faithfully served for the remaining 13 years of his life. One of the notable aspects of Erfo's episcopacy was his unwavering support for Henry IV during the investiture controversy, a conflict between the papacy and the Holy Roman Emperor over the appointment of bishops.

During his tenure, Erfo dedicated himself to the construction of several churches and other religious works within the diocese of Münster.
