Death: August 20, 1936
Blessed Enrique Rodríguez Tortosa, also known as Enrique Rodríguez Tortosa, was born on April 30, 1908, in Terque, Almería, Spain. At a very young age, he was left orphaned and was raised by his aunt Araceli. Despite experiencing such hardships, Enrique grew up to be a devout and committed Christian, known for his deep faith and unwavering commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
Enrique's piety and humble nature greatly endeared him to his community in the diocese of Almería. He actively participated in Catholic Action, a lay organization that promotes the Gospel values and the social teachings of the Catholic Church. As a member of this organization, he dedicated himself to serving others, especially those in need, and promoting justice and harmony within his community.
Tragedy struck during the Spanish Civil War when Communist militia invaded his town. The militia demanded that Enrique renounce his Christian faith, but he steadfastly refused to do so. In an act of defiance against these persecutors, Enrique boldly proclaimed his allegiance to Christ, even in the face of imminent danger. As a result, he was forcibly seized, thrown into a truck, and driven out of the village.
On August 20, 1936, Enrique Rodríguez Tortosa was mercilessly martyred in the area known as La Rambla de Gérgal in Almería, Spain. His unyielding faith and refusal to renounce Christ cost him his life, but these acts of martyrdom also became a testament to his unwavering love for God.
Enrique's martyrdom and exemplary witness to the Catholic faith did not go unnoticed. On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom and declared him venerable. This decree acknowledged Enrique's heroic virtue and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith.
Later, on March 25, 2017, Pope Francis presided over the Beatification Mass of Blessed Enrique Rodríguez Tortosa. The beatification ceremony took place in the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce, Almería, Spain, and was a momentous occasion to honor the life and martyrdom of this humble layman. Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, was present during the beatification ceremony.
Today, Blessed Enrique Rodríguez Tortosa's feast day is celebrated on August 20th each year. His life is a powerful reminder of the courage and unwavering faith that individuals can display even in the face of severe persecution. As a faithful servant of God, he continues to inspire believers to remain steadfast in their Christian convictions and to embody the virtues of honesty, humility, and love for their fellow humans.
