Feast Day: October 4
Birth: October 13, 1908
Death: October 1, 3
Blessed Enrique Morant Pellicer, also known as Enrique Morant, was born on 13 October 1908 in Bellreguard, Valencia, Spain, into a deeply religious family. Growing up in such an environment, it is no surprise that Enrique developed a strong faith from an early age.
Enrique attended a Catholic high school in Gandia, Spain, where he received a solid education rooted in Catholic teachings. After completing his high school studies, he pursued a degree in architecture in Madrid, Spain. However, despite his interest in this field, he eventually felt a strong calling to the priesthood and decided to answer it.
In 1933, Enrique was ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Valencia, Spain. He was then appointed as a parish priest in Barig, where he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to revitalizing parish life. Recognizing the importance of education and culture, he started a library and a choir, focusing on nurturing the spiritual growth of his parishioners.
Enrique also had a profound commitment to youth ministry, understanding that young people are the future of the Church. In line with this, he introduced Catholic Action to the area, aiming to engage young Catholics in service and faith-based activities.
Unfortunately, the anti-Christian persecutions of the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, forcing Enrique to leave his parish life behind. He relocated to Valencia and continued to serve within the Church's administration. However, as the persecutions intensified, he made the difficult decision to withdraw and live with his family.
Tragically, on 3 October 1936, at 11 am, Enrique was arrested solely due to his vocation as a priest. He was subjected to a sham "trial," during which he fearlessly admitted his dedication to the priesthood. Later that evening, he was executed in Xeraco, Valencia, in a chilling act of martyrdom, sacrificing his life for his unwavering faith.
Blessed Enrique Morant Pellicer is remembered for his steadfast commitment to his parishioners, his relentless efforts to strengthen Catholicism among the youth, and his sacrificial witness during a tumultuous period in Spain. His exemplary life of service and his martyrdom have led to his veneration by the Catholic Church.
On 18 December 2000, Pope John Paul II declared Enrique Morant Pellicer a martyr, recognizing his extraordinary faith and the unjust circumstances surrounding his death. Finally, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." Blessed Enrique Morant Pellicer is honored annually on 4 October, and he is also commemorated on 22 September as one of the Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.
