Death: December 7, 1936
Blessed Enrique Andrés Monfort, also known as Benedicto Andrés, was a devout Catholic monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on April 25, 1899, in Villafranca del Cid, Castellón, Spain. From a young age, Enrique showed a strong inclination towards spirituality and a deep desire to serve God.
In his early adulthood, Enrique joined the Marist Brothers, a religious congregation focused on providing education. He dedicated himself to the life of a monk, embracing a simple and disciplined existence in line with the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. With unwavering faith, he sought to inspire others through his example and guidance.
During the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, Enrique's commitment to his religious calling was tested. He fearlessly persevered through a time of great turmoil and hostility towards the Church in Spain. Despite the dangers that surrounded him, he remained steadfast in his vocation, continuing to fulfill his duties as a Marist Brother.
Tragically, on December 7, 1936, in Albocácer, Castellón, Enrique Andrés Monfort fell victim to the violence and persecution of the Spanish Civil War. He was martyred for his unyielding faith and his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His courageous witness to Christ and his commitment to his religious community left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
In recognition of his sanctity and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Enrique Andrés Monfort venerable on June 3, 2013, through a decree of martyrology. Less than six months later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing him the title of Blessed. This beatification served as a testament to his holy life and his sacrifice in the face of adversity.
Blessed Enrique Andrés Monfort's life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals, teaching us the importance of faith, courage, and commitment to God even in the most challenging times. His feast day is celebrated on December 7th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom and providing an opportunity for believers to honor his memory and seek his intercession.
