Biography

Blessed Enrico Alfieri, also known as Enrico d’Asti or Enrico of Asti, was born in 1315 in Asti, Italy. He was born into a noble family, the son of Guglielmo and Agnesina Alfieri. From a young age, Enrico felt a calling to religious life and joined the Franciscan friars in Asti when he was just 15 years old.

Enrico's dedication and piety quickly caught the attention of his superiors, and he was eventually appointed as the superior of the Franciscan house in Asti. His leadership skills and deep spirituality were recognized, and in 1372 he was appointed as the superior of the Genoese province.

In 1387, Enrico was appointed as the Vicar of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, a position of great responsibility and authority within the Franciscan Order. Later that same year, Enrico was elected as the Minister General of the entire Franciscan Order. He served in this position for the remaining 18 years of his life, which included the tumultuous period of the Great Western Schism.

As Minister General, Enrico conducted six General Chapters, which were important assemblies of Franciscan friars from around the world. During his time as leader of the Order, Enrico also led a reform movement aimed at increasing devotion to the Rule of the Franciscan Order. His gentle and inspiring leadership style brought about positive changes and a renewed sense of commitment among the friars.

Blessed Enrico Alfieri passed away in 1405 in Ravenna, Italy, succumbing to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the floor of the church of San Francesco in Ravenna, a fitting final resting place for a man who dedicated his life to the Franciscan Order.
