Blessed Engrecia Andiarena Sagaseta, also known as Sister Daría, was a devout Catholic nun who dedicated her life to serving the sick as a member of the Servants of Mary, Ministers of the Sick. She was born on April 5, 1879, in Donamaría, a small town in Navarra, Spain.
Sister Daría grew up in a deeply religious family and from an early age felt a calling to enter religious life. She entered the congregation of the Servants of Mary and took her final vows, committing herself to a life of service and prayer. Known for her kindness, compassion, and selflessness, Sister Daría was loved by those around her.
However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution intensified. It was a time marked by violence and hostility towards anyone associated with the Church, and many Catholic clergy and religious suffered greatly. Even in the face of danger, Sister Daría remained steadfast in her faith, continuing her mission of caring for the sick.
Tragically, on December 7, 1936, Sister Daría was martyred for her unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church. She was killed in Aravaca, a suburb of Madrid, Spain. Her martyrdom was a testament to her unyielding faith and willingness to sacrifice her own life for the sake of the Gospel.
Recognizing her heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Sister Daría venerable on June 3, 2013. Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified her, bestowing upon her the title of Blessed. The beatification ceremony took place at the Complex Educatiu in Tarragona, Spain, with Cardinal Angelo Amato as the chief celebrant.
Blessed Engrecia Andiarena Sagaseta, or Sister Daría, serves as a model of faith, courage, and dedication to God's calling. Her life and death stand as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by many during times of persecution, and she continues to inspire and intercede for those in need.
