Biography

Blessed Emili Bover Albareda, born on 31 August 1868 in Castelltersol, Barcelona, Spain, was a devoted member of the Claretians, a religious congregation founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret. He entered the order and made his profession on 1 October 1889, dedicating his life to serving God and spreading the message of the Gospel.

After years of arduous preparation, Emili was ordained a priest on 16 January 1898. He was known for his zeal and commitment to his faith, and he tirelessly worked to bring spiritual guidance to those in need. Emili's compassionate nature endeared him to his congregation, and the fruits of his ministry were evident in the lives he touched.

Tragically, Emili's life was cut short during the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense persecution against the Catholic Church. On 20 August 1936, Emili Bover Albareda was shot in Cervera, Lleida, Spain. His martyrdom was a result of his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs. Emili faced his execution with bravery and embraced his suffering, becoming a witness to the strength of Christian conviction.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Emili Bover Albareda venerable on 21 December 2016. This decree affirmed his life of heroic virtue and willingness to endure persecution for his faith. Then, on 21 October 2017, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony held at the Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, a representative of the Holy Father.

Blessed Emili Bover Albareda's feast day is celebrated on 20 August, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is recognized along with 108 other Spanish Claretian martyrs on 1 February. These courageous men and women gave their lives during the Spanish Civil War for their commitment to Christ and the Church.
