Biography

Blessed Elizabeth of Mantua, also known as Elizabeth Bartholomea Picenardi, Elisabeth Picenardi of Mantua, Elisabetta, and Bartolomea Picenardi, was born in 1428 into a wealthy family in Mantua, Italy. She received a privileged upbringing, surrounded by the comforts and luxuries that came with her family's status. However, Elizabeth's life took a transformative turn when her mother passed away during her childhood.

Despite her young age, Elizabeth displayed a deep spiritual inclination and a desire for a life dedicated to God. She received some formal education and was particularly instructed in the practice of meditation by her mother. Additionally, Elizabeth's father, recognizing her devotion, taught her Latin so that she may be able to read the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At some point, Elizabeth and her sister made the decision to join the Third Order of the Servites, a religious community known for their commitment to poverty, chastity, and obedience. Elizabeth soon became renowned for her holiness, humility, and gentleness, qualities that attracted many other young women to the Servites. In fact, under Elizabeth's direction, a community of like-minded women was formed within the Third Order.

Elizabeth's guidance and example were instrumental in fostering a spirit of fervor and dedication among the members of this community. Together, they pursued a life of prayer, virtue, and service to others. Elizabeth's reputation as a spiritual guide and her ability to mentor others in their journey toward God's love became widely recognized.

On February 19, 1468, Blessed Elizabeth of Mantua peacefully passed away from natural causes. Miracles were reported to have occurred at her tomb, further adding to her spiritual legacy and reputation for holiness.

In recognition of her exemplary life and the spiritual impact she had on others, Pope Pius VII beatified Elizabeth on November 10, 1804, confirming her cultus or popular veneration within the Catholic Church.
