Biography

Blessed Elisabeth Stagel, also known as Elisabeth Staglin, Elisabeth Steiglin, and Elsbeth, was born into a noble family around the year 1300 in Zurich, Switzerland. From a young age, she displayed a deep spirituality and a strong desire to dedicate her life to the service of God.

In pursuit of her religious calling, Elisabeth joined the Dominican order and became a nun. She quickly gained a reputation for her piety, humility, and devotion to her vows. Blessed Henry Suso, a renowned theologian and mystic, became Elisabeth's close friend and spiritual mentor.

Elisabeth and Henry engaged in numerous conversations and correspondences about the challenges and rewards of religious life. Recognizing the profundity of their discussions, Elisabeth secretly recorded their conversations and preserved their letters. However, when Henry discovered her writings, he became concerned about the perceived promotion of extreme self-denial and asceticism that he had lived. In response to his concerns, Elisabeth willingly handed over her writings, and Henry proceeded to burn most of them.

Despite this setback, Elisabeth remained committed to her religious calling and continued to thrive within the Dominican community. Her unwavering faith and steadfast leadership eventually led her to be appointed as the prioress of the convent in Töss, Switzerland. In this role, she guided her fellow nuns with wisdom and compassion, fostering a spirit of unity and devotion among them.

Blessed Elisabeth Stagel exemplified the virtues of humility, obedience, and selflessness throughout her life. Her deep spirituality and dedication to living in accordance with God's will inspired those around her. Although little is known about the specifics of her teachings or writings due to the partial destruction of her correspondence, her example of faithfulness and devotion to God continue to inspire and guide others on their own spiritual journeys.

Blessed Elisabeth Stagel passed away around the year 1360, succumbing to natural causes. Her life and legacy continue to be celebrated, particularly in Switzerland, where she is venerated as a symbol of holiness and virtue. Although she has not been officially beatified, the memory of her devout life and commitment to the Dominican order have left an indelible mark on the Catholic community.
