Biography

Blessed Elías Carbonell Molla was born on 20 November 1869 in Cocentaina, Alicante, Spain. He was the son of a physician and the brother of Blessed Juan Carbonell Molla. From an early age, Elías showed great piety and a strong desire to serve God.

Elías followed his calling and entered the seminary in Valencia, Spain in 1890. His dedication to his studies was evident, and he was ordained a priest in the archdiocese of Valencia in 1893. After his ordination, Father Elías Carbonell Molla began his ministry as a co-adjutor of El Salvador.

During his time as a priest, Father Elías displayed a deep compassion for the sick and marginalized. He served as a director of a hospital and asylum, where he provided exceptional care for those in need. His commitment to the well-being of others extended beyond the walls of the institution, as he tirelessly worked to alleviate the suffering of the poor and the vulnerable.

Father Elías Carbonell Molla was not only a dedicated caretaker but also a renowned preacher. His eloquent sermons captivated the hearts of many, as he fearlessly proclaimed the Gospel message and called others to a life of faith and virtue. His words inspired countless individuals to return to the church and deepen their relationship with God.

Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War brought about a time of great persecution for the Catholic Church in Spain, and Father Elías became a victim of this hostility. On 2 October 1936, he was martyred, shot on the road outside Sax, Alicante, Spain. Despite the danger posed by the political climate, Father Elías remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to renounce his beliefs even in the face of death.

The exemplary life and martyrdom of Father Elías Carbonell Molla did not go unnoticed. His heroic witness to the Gospel led to his veneration by the faithful. On 18 December 2000, Pope John Paul II recognized his martyrdom through a decree, further confirming his holiness. A few months later, on 11 March 2001, the same pope beatified Father Elías, officially bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed."

Today, Blessed Elías Carbonell Molla serves as an inspiration to Catholics around the world. His selfless dedication to the service of others, his unwavering faith in the face of persecution, and his powerful preaching continue to resonate with believers. On his feast day, 2 October, the faithful remember and honor his life, seeking his intercession and striving to imitate his virtues.
