Biography

Blessed Ejôll Deda was born on 22 February 1917 in Shkodrô, Albania. He began his spiritual journey by studying with the Franciscans, where he developed a deep love for God and a desire to serve Him.

Recognizing his calling, Ejôll Deda furthered his education at the Shkodrô Pontifical Seminary. It was here that he honed his theological knowledge and pastoral skills, preparing himself to join the priesthood. On 24 February 1943, he was ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult, Albania.

Deeply committed to his faith, Blessed Ejôll Deda dedicated himself to the spiritual well-being of his archdiocese. He tirelessly served as a vicar, providing guidance and support to the local Catholic community. He was known for his compassion, humility, and strong devotion to God.

Tragically, during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Communist government in Albania, Blessed Ejôll Deda was arrested on 12 November 1947. He was unjustly accused of various crimes and sentenced to ten years in prison. Despite facing immense suffering and persecution, he remained resolute in his faith and unwavering in his commitment to Christ.

Blessed Ejôll Deda's time in prison was marked by harsh conditions and immense psychological and physical torture. Nevertheless, he courageously held onto his faith, becoming a source of inspiration and strength for his fellow prisoners. His unwavering faith and unwavering commitment to Christ made a profound impact on those around him, even in the midst of extreme adversity.

Tragically, on 12 May 1948, Blessed Ejôll Deda's life was cut short in the prison in Shkodrô, where he had been confined. He died as a faithful martyr, bearing witness to the love of God and the Christian faith in the face of persecution and suffering.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Blessed Ejôll Deda venerable on 26 April 2016. Later, on 5 November 2016, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and his sacrifice for the sake of Christ. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Ejôll Deda's life serves as a powerful example of faithfulness, courage, and devotion. His unwavering commitment to God, even in the face of persecution, continues to inspire and challenge believers around the world, reminding us of the profound sacrifice made by countless individuals for their faith.
