Biography

Blessed Edward Osbaldeston was born around 1560 in Osbaldeston, Lancashire, England, the son of Thomas Osbaldeston. He dedicated his life to the Catholic faith and pursued religious studies at the English College in Douai, France. After completing his education there, he continued his studies at the seminary in Rheims, France.

On September 21, 1585, Edward Osbaldeston was ordained as a priest. Driven by a strong commitment to his faith and a desire to minister to covert Catholics, he returned to England on April 27, 1589. Throughout his ministry, he faced significant risks and dangers due to religious persecution during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Blessed Edward Osbaldeston had a deep devotion to Saint Jerome, the renowned theologian and scholar of the early Church. This devotion influenced his approach to studying and teaching the Catholic faith. Even in the face of adversity, he remained steadfast in his commitment to spreading the gospel and providing spiritual guidance to the faithful.

Tragically, Edward Osbaldeston's efforts to serve the Catholic community were ultimately betrayed by a fellow priest named Thomas Clark, who had apostatized from the faith. On September 30, 1594, Edward was arrested at an inn in Tollerton, Yorkshire. Charged with high treason for his priesthood, he was swiftly condemned.

His trial ended in a conviction, and on November 16, 1594, Blessed Edward Osbaldeston was executed by being hanged, drawn, and quartered in York, North Yorkshire, England. He joined the ranks of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales, commemorated on November 22. Additionally, he is also honored as one of the Martyrs of Douai, celebrated on October 29.

Blessed Edward Osbaldeston's martyrdom and unwavering dedication to his faith have been recognized and commended by the Catholic Church. On November 10, 1986, Pope John Paul II decreed his martyrdom, affirming his sainthood. Furthermore, on November 22, 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified him, elevating him to the stage of blessed.

Blessed Edward Osbaldeston stands as a testament to the resilience and bravery of the Catholic faithful during a time of religious upheaval and persecution in England. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire and serve as an example of unwavering devotion to the principles and teachings of the Catholic Church.
