Blessed Edward Grzymala, born on 19 September 1906 in Kolodziaz, Podlaskie, Poland, was a devoted Catholic priest in the diocese of Wloclawek. His life and ministry were sadly cut short during the horrific period of Nazi persecutions in World War II.
Father Edward Grzymala firmly stood against the oppressive regime of the Third Reich, fearlessly defending the principles of justice, human rights, and religious freedom. During the height of the war, when Poland was under German occupation, Father Edward Grzymala was arrested, unjustly imprisoned, and ultimately martyred for his refusal to abandon his religious duties and remain silent against the atrocities being committed. He became a symbol of resistance and hope, inspiring others to stand against the forces of darkness.
On 10 August 1942, Father Edward Grzymala tragically met his end at the prison camp in Dachau, Oberbayern, Germany. He was among countless innocent victims gassed in the gas chambers, a fate imposed upon him by the Nazi regime. His martyrdom serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who courageously fought against the evil forces that plagued the world during those dark times.
Recognizing his heroic virtue and the ultimate sacrifice he made, Father Edward Grzymala was venerated on 26 March 1999 by Pope John Paul II. The Pope declared him a martyr, acknowledging his complete dedication to his faith even in the face of grave danger. On 13 June 1999, Pope John Paul II presided over the beatification ceremony in Warsaw, Poland, elevating Father Edward Grzymala to the esteemed title of "Blessed."
