Biography

Blessed Edvige Carboni, also known as the Stigmatic of Monte Pellegrino, was born on the late night of 2 May 1880 in Pozzomaggiore, Sassari, Italy. She was the second child of Giovanni Battista Carboni and Maria Domenica Pinna. Unfortunately, Edvige had to leave school at the 4th grade due to various circumstances.

From a young age, Edvige felt a strong calling to the religious life. However, she selflessly decided to stay at her parents' home and dedicate herself to caring for her chronically ill mother. Edvige's love for God and her desire to serve Him intensified during this time, and she spent all her free moments in prayer, seeking solace and strength.

On the 14th of July 1911, something extraordinary happened in Edvige's life. She received the signs of the stigmata, the visible wounds of Christ's crucifixion, on her body. Initially, she tried to conceal the signs and the bloodstains that resulted from them, but it soon became apparent to those around her. This mystical experience further deepened her faith and led her to a life of even greater devotion and contemplation.

In her pursuit of spiritual growth and seeking to fully embrace her calling, Edvige moved to Rome, Italy, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. During the war years, she dedicated herself to serving others through various charitable works and fervent prayer. Her unwavering faith became a beacon of hope and inspiration for those suffering from the ravages of war, and she tirelessly prayed for the souls of the departed.

Throughout her life, Blessed Edvige Carboni reported numerous apparitions and encounters with holy figures, including Jesus Christ Himself, as well as Saint Anne, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Dominic Savio, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Gemma Galgani, Saint Genaro of Naples, Saint John Bosco, Saint Paul the Apostle, Saint Rita of Cascia, Saint Sebastian, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, and even attacks by demons. These encounters affirmed and strengthened her spiritual journey, providing her with guidance and comfort.

Blessed Edvige Carboni passed away at 10:30 pm on 17 February 1952 in Rome, Italy, from angina pectoris. She was buried initially in Albano Laziale, Italy, next to her brother. However, on 6 October 2015, her remains were re-interred at the Pontifical Sanctuary of Santa Maria Goretti in Nettuno, Rome, Italy.

Her spiritual influence and the impact of her life's work were widely recognized. On 4 May 2017, Pope Francis formally decreed her heroic virtues, and she was venerated by the Catholic Church. Furthermore, on 15 June 2019, Pope Francis beatified her, signifying her blessedness and her special place in heaven. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Ippodromo Generale Eugenio Unali in Pozzomaggiore, Sassari, Italy, and was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu.

Blessed Edvige Carboni's life serves as a testament to the power of faith, devotion, and selflessness. Her deep relationship with God, her mystical experiences, and her tireless devotion to prayer and service to the needy continue to inspire countless believers even today. She is a shining example of how one person's unwavering faith can bring hope and comfort to those in need.
