Biography

Blessed Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez, also known as Eduardo of Almeria, was a Catholic priest in the diocese of Almeria, Spain. He was born on 18 February 1878 in Adra, a town located in the province of Almeria, Spain. From a young age, he displayed a strong devotion to the Catholic faith and felt a calling to serve God and His people.

Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez dedicated his life to the service of the Church and was ordained as a priest. He diligently carried out his pastoral duties, offering spiritual guidance and support to the faithful in his diocese. Known for his humility and compassion, he was loved and respected by his parishioners.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, a time of great persecution against Catholics, Blessed Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez became a victim of religious intolerance. On 23 October 1936, in Almeria, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel.

Despite facing severe persecution, Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez remained steadfast in his beliefs until his last breath. He courageously embraced his martyrdom, offering his life as a witness to the love of Christ. His selflessness and unwavering faith in the face of adversity continue to inspire believers today.

Recognizing his exceptional virtue and sacrifice, Pope Francis decreed the martyrdom of Blessed Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez on 14 June 2016. This declaration led to his beatification ceremony, which took place on 25 March 2017 at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aguadulce in Almería, Spain. The beatification ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who officially proclaimed him blessed on behalf of the Church.

Blessed Eduardo Valverde Rodríguez stands as a shining example of faith, courage, and devotion to God. His life and martyrdom remind us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of religious persecution.
