Biography

Blessed Eduard Cabanach Majem was born on December 31, 1908, in Bellmunt, Tarragona, Spain. He hailed from a devout family and was raised in a pious environment, where faith played a central role in his upbringing. Eduard had a strong devotion to Saint John Berchmans, who served as an inspiration throughout his life.

Eduard's family had a profound influence on his vocation as three of his brothers also entered religious life. This familial example ignited his own calling, and he eventually pursued priesthood. After his ordination, Eduard became a member of the Sons of the Holy Family, a religious congregation founded by Saint Josep Manyanet.

In his ministry, Eduard demonstrated a selfless dedication to serving others. He was appointed as the director of the Saint Peter the Apostle school in Reus, Spain, where he actively nurtured the spiritual growth and education of his students. Additionally, he played a crucial role in fostering vocations in young individuals, offering both material and spiritual support to those discerning religious life.

Eduard's compassionate spirit extended beyond the school walls. He actively engaged in the corporal works of mercy by ministering to prisoners in Reus and on the prison ships of Tarragona. His compassionate presence and spiritual guidance provided solace and hope to those who were suffering.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Eduard's unwavering commitment to his faith and his ministry led to his martyrdom. On August 25, 1936, in Vila-rodona, Tarragona, he was persecuted for his religious beliefs and was put to death for his unwavering commitment to Christ.

Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial life of Blessed Eduard Cabanach Majem, he was venerated on May 10, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI, who decreed his martyrdom. Following this, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of Blessed on October 13, 2013.
