Blessed Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz, also known as Edward Joseph Rosaz and Edvard Josef Rosaz, was born on February 15, 1830, in Susa, Piedmont, Italy. He would go on to become a dedicated servant of God, particularly known for his work in prison ministry and his care for marginalized children.
In 1854, Edoardo was ordained as a priest in Nice, France. Shortly after his ordination, he began working in prison ministry, ministering to the spiritual needs of prisoners and offering them comfort, guidance, and hope. His compassionate and empathetic nature made him a beloved figure among the incarcerated.
Driven by his deep faith and devotion to Christ, Edoardo saw the need to provide a safe and loving environment for abused and abandoned children. In 1856, he founded a home for these children, where they could receive proper care, education, and a chance at a brighter future. This home became a haven for many vulnerable children, offering them love, support, and a sense of belonging.
Edoardo's desire to further serve God's people led him to establish the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis of Susa. This religious community, founded in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi, focused on serving the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. The sisters followed a life of poverty, selflessness, and absolute dedication to the Gospel.
Recognizing his exemplary leadership and commitment to the Catholic Church, Edoardo was appointed as Bishop of Susa, Italy, on February 24, 1878. As bishop, he worked tirelessly to promote the teachings of the Church and to strengthen the faith of the local community. He served with great humility and pastoral care, always putting the needs of his flock first.
Blessed Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz passed away on May 3, 1903, in Susa, Piedmont, Italy. His life of selfless service and devotion to God earned him veneration, and on March 22, 1986, he was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II. Recognizing his holiness and the impact of his work, Edoardo was beatified on July 14, 1991, by the same pontiff in Susa, Piedmont, Italy.
Today, Blessed Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz is remembered as a true example of Christian charity and compassion. His dedication to helping those who were marginalized, his commitment to the education and well-being of children, and his unwavering faith continue to inspire and guide people in their own service to the Lord.
