Biography

Blessed Edmund Duke was a prominent Catholic priest in the apostolic vicariate of England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He valiantly served the Catholic community during a time of intense persecution, ultimately sacrificing his own life in defense of his faith. Born around 1563 in Kent, England, Edmund Duke dedicated his life to the service of God and the Catholic Church.

As a Catholic priest, Edmund Duke faced numerous challenges and threats due to the religious turmoil in England during the Elizabethan era. Queen Elizabeth I's reign saw the increased persecution of Catholics, as the Crown sought to establish Protestantism as the state religion. The faithful Catholics who undermined this establishment were considered traitors and were subjected to severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and even death.

Edmund Duke's steadfast commitment to his faith and his devotion to the spiritual needs of the Catholic community made him a target for persecution. On 27 May 1590, he was hanged in Durham, County Durham, England, for his refusal to renounce his Catholic faith and allegiance to the papacy. The Catholic Church recognized the exemplary life and sacrificial death of Edmund Duke. On 10 November 1986, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic virtue and the sanctity of his life. Additionally, on 22 November 1987, Pope John Paul II beatified Edmund Duke, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." His feast days are celebrated on 27 May, 29 October as one of the Martyrs of Douai, and 22 November as one of the Martyrs of England, Scotland, and Wales.
