Blessed Eberhard of Mons, also known as Eberhard of Einberg, Eberhardus, Eberardus, Ebrardus, or Évrard, was a nobleman born in Mons, modern-day Belgium. He lived during the 12th century and led a remarkable life of transformation and devotion to God.

However, it is certain that he was born into the noble family of Mons, which held significant influence and power in the region. As a young man, Eberhard followed the path of a warrior and served as a soldier and commander for Limburg during a war against Brabant.
Following his military service, Eberhard embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, and Compostella, Spain, as an act of penance for his actions as a soldier. These pilgrimages were seen as a way for individuals to seek forgiveness and spiritual growth. It was during this time that Eberhard experienced a deep spiritual transformation and developed a desire to withdraw from the world and dedicate his life to God.
Seeking a life of solitude and devotion, Eberhard joined the Cistercian abbey of Morimond in Parnoy-en-Bassigny, France. In his desire to live a humble life, he took on the role of a swineherd, caring for the abbey's pigs. Eberhard's intention was to live anonymously and serve in whatever capacity was needed, without drawing attention to himself.
However, his true identity and remarkable story were eventually discovered by the brothers of Morimond. Recognizing the sincerity and depth of Eberhard's commitment, they welcomed him as a brother monk. Eberhard's humility, piety, and dedication to a life of prayer and service deeply resonated with the Cistercians, and he quickly gained respect and admiration from his fellow monks.
In 1142, Brother Eberhard, now a respected member of the Cistercian community, founded two new monastic houses. The first one was established in Einberg, and the second in Mont-Saint-George. These houses provided an opportunity for others to share in Eberhard's devotion and live a life dedicated to God. Under his guidance, these monastic communities flourished and became centers of spiritual growth and deepened faith.
Blessed Eberhard is said to have died around the year 1150, due to natural causes.
