Blessed Dionisio Pérez García, also known as Dionisio Pérez García, was born on 7 April 1912 in Villavilla de Villadiego, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, he exhibited a strong sense of devotion and a desire to serve God. Inspired by his faith, Dionisio joined the Dominicans in Almagro, Spain, on 30 September 1930.
After entering the Dominican order, Dionisio made his solemn vows as a cooperator brother on 25 May 1933. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and service within the Dominican community. Dionisio spent two years in Cordoba, Spain, cultivating his spiritual growth before returning to Almagro with a burning desire to become a missionary.
Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War threatened the lives of many faithful Christians, including Dionisio and his Dominican brothers in Almagro. The anti-Christian forces specifically targeted his community and their house. Despite the grave danger, Dionisio remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith.
Tragically, just a few weeks into the conflict, on 14 August 1936, Dionisio Pérez García was martyred for his unwavering dedication to Christ. He was killed, attaining the crown of martyrdom, as he boldly professed his Catholic faith in El Picado, Almagro, Ciudad Real, Spain.
Blessed Dionisio Pérez García is remembered and revered as one of the Martyred Dominicans of Almagro, honored and celebrated on 14 August. He is also recognized among the Spanish Martyrs of the 20th Century, with his feast day on 6 November. His relics are enshrined in the Saint Thomas Aquinas church in Seville, Spain.
Acknowledging the courage and fidelity exemplified by Dionisio, Pope Francis declared his martyrdom on 11 December 2019. This decree opened the path towards his beatification, a significant recognition in the Catholic Church. Finally, on 18 June 2022, Dionisio Pérez García was beatified by Pope Francis in a joyful ceremony held at the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in Sevilla, Spain. The beatification Mass was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
Blessed Dionisio Pérez García stands as a shining example of unwavering faith and devotion to God, inspiring all who learn of his life to remain steadfast in the face of persecution. His memory continues to be cherished, and his intercession is sought by the faithful. May his life and martyrdom inspire generations to come.
