Biography

Blessed Diego Ventaja Milán, also known as Didaco, was born on 22 June 1880 in Ohanes, Almería, Spain. He was the son of Juan Ventaja and Palmira Milán, and from a young age, displayed a deep devotion to the Catholic faith.

Diego received his education at the prestigious Sacro Monte Granada, where he nurtured his passion for theology and spirituality. Recognizing his intellectual capabilities, Diego went on to study at both the Collegio San Giuseppe and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. It was in Rome that he was ordained as a priest in 1902, an event that marked the beginning of his dedicated service to the Church.

After his ordination, Blessed Diego Ventaja Milán embarked on a journey of ministry. He initially served as a chaplain, providing spiritual guidance and support to those in need. His exceptional knowledge and understanding of moral theology led him to become a professor of this subject at Sacro Monte Granada, where he shared his wisdom and insights with seminarians preparing for their priesthood.

Diego's commitment to education extended beyond the seminary walls, as he became a valued member of the Academic Council at the Central Seminary of Granada. His contribution to the formation of future priests was highly regarded, and his teachings left a lasting impact on numerous young men aspiring to serve the Church.

In recognition of his exemplary dedication, Diego was appointed as the Bishop of Almería, Spain, on 1 May 1935. His episcopal ministry was marked by unwavering faith, compassion, and a deep love for his flock. However, his tenure coincided with a tumultuous time in Spanish history ‚Äì the Spanish Civil War.

As a staunch defender of the Catholic faith, Blessed Diego Ventaja Milán faced hostility from anti-Catholic forces aligned with the Popular Front during the Spanish Civil War. With unyielding courage, he fearlessly continued to teach Christianity, refusing to compromise his beliefs even in the face of danger.

The hostility towards the Church intensified, leading to Diego's arrest. On 30 August 1936, he was executed for the crime of teaching Christianity, falling victim to the violence that plagued Spain during this tumultuous period. His martyrdom served as a powerful testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church.

Blessed Diego Ventaja Milán is remembered as one of the Martyrs of Almeria, a group of individuals who valiantly gave their lives for their faith during the Spanish Civil War. The Catholic Church commemorates his feast day on 30 August. Additionally, he is also honored on 16 November as one of the Martyrs of Almeria.

Although Blessed Diego Ventaja Milán has not yet been officially beatified, his life and martyrdom continue to inspire and motivate believers worldwide. His virtuous example of unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by many during times of persecution.
