Biography

Blessed Diego Llorca Llopis, also known as Didaco Llorca Llopis, was born on 2 July 1896 in Oliva, Valencia, Spain. He came from a deeply religious family and from an early age, he felt a strong calling to the priesthood. Following this vocation, he pursued his studies at the seminary in Valencia and was eventually ordained as a priest in the archdiocese of Valencia in 1925.

Father Didaco began his priestly ministry as a co-adjutor in various parishes, including Setla-Mirarrosa, Miraflor, Denia, and Benissa. Throughout his ministry, he became known for his warm and friendly attitude, as well as his unwavering dedication to teaching the catechism. It was evident to all who encountered him that he had a deep love for God and a genuine care for his flock.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Didaco found himself caught in the crossfire of religious persecution. In an attempt to escape the escalating violence, he returned to his hometown, hoping to find some respite. However, his efforts were in vain, as on 5 September 1936, he was arrested and imprisoned, simply for the "crime" of being a priest.

The following day, on 6 September 1936, Father Didaco was brutally martyred. Shot at dawn in Gata de Gorgos, Alicante, Spain, he bravely offered his life as a witness to his faith. His death exemplified his unwavering commitment to Christ and his unwavering dedication to his pastoral duties.

Father Didaco Llorca Llopis was recognized as a martyr for his faith, and his cause for beatification and canonization was formally investigated by the Catholic Church. On 18 December 2000, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, declaring Father Didaco's heroic death for the sake of his faith. Subsequently, on 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and his sacrifice.

Blessed Diego Llorca Llopis stands as a powerful example of courage and fidelity. His life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the importance of standing firm in our beliefs, even in the face of persecution and adversity. We commemorate his feast day on 6 September each year, celebrating his life and seeking his intercession for our own spiritual journey.
