Blessed Diego De Soto, also known as Diego De Toledo, was a Mercedarian monk who lived during the 13th century in Spain. He was born in Toledo, Spain, but not much is known about his early life. Diego De Soto dedicated himself to a life of service to God and joined the Mercedarian Order, a religious order founded to redeem Christians held captive by Muslims.
Diego De Soto embarked on a spiritual journey under the guidance of Saint Serapion of Algiers, a renowned spiritual director of the time. As a result of his profound spiritual growth, he was appointed as the master of novices within the Mercedarian Order, responsible for the instruction and formation of new members.
In the year 1237, Diego De Soto was sent to Granada, Spain, with a mission to redeem Christian prisoners who were held captive by the Muslims. Sadly, his devotion to the cause of redemption led to his own capture and imprisonment by the Muslims. What followed was a period of immense suffering for Diego De Soto as he was subjected to various forms of torture, starvation, and physical abuse due to his unwavering faith in Christ.
Despite the unbearable conditions he faced, Diego De Soto never wavered in his commitment to his beliefs. His unwavering faith and steadfastness made a deep impression on those who witnessed his martyrdom. He became a symbol of courage, resilience, and unwavering devotion to God.
Diego De Soto died a martyr's death in the year 1237 while still imprisoned in Granada. His sacrifice and steadfastness in the face of cruelty and persecution serve as an inspiring example of living a life dedicated to God.
The Mercedarian Order holds a special place of reverence for Diego De Soto and celebrates his feast day on 15th January. Additionally, he is also commemorated on 6th November as one of the early Mercedarian martyrs. Although Diego De Soto has not yet been officially venerated or beatified by the Catholic Church, his example continues to inspire and edify countless faithful individuals.
