Diego began his seminary studies in Córdoba, where he excelled in his theological studies and demonstrated a deep understanding of the Catholic faith. After completing his training, he was ordained to the priesthood and assigned to serve in the parish of Argallón, a small village in the region.
As a priest, Diego devoted himself to the spiritual guidance and pastoral care of his parishioners. He tirelessly ministered to their needs, offering the sacraments, providing guidance and counselling, and offering comfort to those in need. His deep faith and profound love for God were evident in his interactions with the people he served.
Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about immense persecution of the Catholic Church and its members. In the midst of this turbulent period, Father Diego's commitment to his faith and his unwavering dedication to his parishioners made him a target for those seeking to suppress the influence of the Church.
On September 21, 1936, Father Diego Albañil Barrena was martyred for his Catholic faith in the town of Granja de Torrehermosa, Badajoz, Spain. He remained steadfast in his faith until the end, refusing to renounce his beliefs or abandon his flock. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his courage, love for God, and commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared him venerable on November 23, 2020. Then, on October 16, 2021, Pope Francis beatified him, officially recognizing him as Blessed Diego Albañil Barrena. The beatification ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
Blessed Diego Albañil Barrena's life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals, reminding them of the importance of faith, courage, and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
