Blessed Dedô Plani was born on 21 January 1891 in the town of Shiroka, Shkodrô, Albania. He lived during a time of great political and religious turmoil in Albania, where the Catholic Church faced severe persecution.
Dedô Plani dedicated his life to serving the Catholic faith and spreading God's love to his fellow believers. He became known for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Church, even in the face of grave danger.
During the communist regime in Albania, which sought to suppress religious practices, Dedô Plani continued to practice his faith in secret. He understood the risks associated with such actions, but remained steadfast in his devotion to God and his fellow believers.
Tragically, Dedô Plani was arrested and subjected to excruciating torture for refusing to renounce his faith. He endured immense suffering at the hands of his captors, but his spirit remained unbroken. Dedô Plani's unwavering commitment to God and the Catholic Church ultimately cost him his life.
On 30 April 1948, Dedô Plani was martyred, tortured to death in Shkodrô, Albania. His sacrifice and martyrdom stand as a testament to his deep faith and his willingness to give his life for his beliefs.
In recognition of his exemplary life and martyrdom, Pope Francis proclaimed Dedô Plani's beatification on 5 November 2016. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.
Blessed Dedô Plani's feast day is celebrated on 30 April each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His life serves as an inspiration to all who face persecution and endure suffering for their faith. May his example remind us to remain steadfast in our commitment to God, even in the midst of adversity.
