Blessed Daniel Mora Nine, also known as Daniel of the Passion, was a Discalced Carmelite priest who met a martyr's death during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 17 February 1908 in Pontevedra, Spain.
Daniel Mora Nine joined the Discalced Carmelites and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God. He took his religious vows and was ordained a priest, striving to imitate the holy example of Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross.
During the tumultuous times of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, religious persecution became widespread. Many clergy, including Catholic priests and nuns, fell victim to this brutal conflict. Father Daniel was among those targeted for his faith and commitment to the Church.
On 31 July 1936, in the town of “Los Cobertizos,” Toledo, Spain, Father Daniel was arrested by the anti-Catholic forces. Faced with the choice of renouncing his Catholic faith or accepting a gruesome death, he chose to remain steadfast in his commitment to Christ.
Father Daniel Mora Nine was martyred for his unwavering dedication to his religious beliefs. He courageously embraced his fate and joyfully embraced the crown of martyrdom, becoming a shining example of faith in the face of persecution.
Recognizing his heroic virtue, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom on 28 April 2006, thereby acknowledging Father Daniel as a martyr for the Catholic faith. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Blessed Daniel Mora Nine in a formal ceremony, paying homage to his sacrifice and proclaiming him as a blessed of the Church.
Today, Blessed Daniel Mora Nine serves as a beacon of inspiration for Catholics worldwide, reminding believers of the strength and courage that can be found through a deep and unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. His feast day is celebrated on 31 July, the anniversary of his martyrdom, as a tribute to his life and a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless others during the Spanish Civil War.
