Biography

Blessed Damian De Portu, also known as Damian of Lerida, was a Mercedarian friar who lived in the 14th century in the city of Lerida, Spain. Born to humble beginnings, little information is available regarding his early life, but it is believed he was born in the slightly earlier 14th century.

As a member of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, also known as the Order of Mercy or Mercedarians, Damian dedicated his life to the service of God and the redemption of Christian captives. In the year 1399, while serving at the convent of Saint Eulalia in Lerida, his heroic actions became well-known and his path to sainthood began.

During this time, northern Africa was plagued by slavery, and many Christians were taken captive by the Saracens. Driven by his deep faith and compassion for those suffering, Damian embarked on a perilous mission to free these prisoners. It is estimated that he successfully ransomed 136 Christians who were enslaved by the Saracens. Notably, he openly preached Christianity during his efforts, fearlessly sharing the Gospel with both captives and captors alike.

Damian's unwavering dedication to the cause of freeing Christian slaves and spreading the Christian faith brings to light his extraordinary bravery and selflessness. Despite facing countless dangers and challenges, he remained steadfast in his conviction and persevered in his mission. Through his actions, he became a shining example of love, mercy, and unwavering faith.

While little is known about his representation, it is believed that representations of Blessed Damian De Portu may depict him adorned in the habit of the Mercedarian order, a symbol of his devotion to their charism of redeeming captives.

Blessed Damian De Portu's feast day is celebrated on October 3rd, honoring the day of his martyrdom which occurred on that date in the year 1399. His beatification process is currently not documented, but his heroic deeds and virtuous life have inspired many to venerate him as a holy servant of God.
