Blessed Cristóbal González Carcedo, born on 21 August 1913 in Lodoso, Burgos, Spain, was a devout Catholic lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He dedicated his life to serving God and others through his vocation as a religious brother.
Cristóbal González Carcedo was raised in a deeply religious family and from a young age, he felt a strong calling to live a life of service to God. In pursuit of this calling, he joined the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians or Lazarists, a clerical religious order founded by St. Vincent de Paul. As a lay brother, Cristóbal committed himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience, serving the poor and marginalized with love and compassion.
During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Cristóbal González Carcedo remained steadfast in his faith despite the risks and persecution that came with it. He witnessed the destruction and violence that ravaged his homeland but remained hopeful and dedicated to his mission of spreading the love of Christ.
Unfortunately, his unwavering faith and commitment to his religious convictions made him a target for those who opposed the Catholic Church. On 23 October 1936, in Vallecas, Madrid, Spain, Cristóbal González Carcedo was martyred for his faith during this turbulent period. He became a martyr, giving his life as a witness to the Gospel and a testament to his unyielding devotion to God.
The martyrdom of Cristóbal González Carcedo did not go unnoticed, and his reputation for holiness quickly spread among the faithful. His virtuous life and heroic death inspired many, and his cause for beatification was opened. On 23 March 2017, Pope Francis recognized Cristóbal González Carcedo's martyrdom, declaring him "Blessed" in a decree of martyrdom.
The beatification ceremony of Blessed Cristóbal González Carcedo took place on 11 November 2017 at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain. The joyful celebration was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid. This beatification recognition by the Church marked an official acknowledgment of Cristóbal's sanctity and his heavenly intercession.
Blessed Cristóbal González Carcedo serves as an exemplary model of faith, courage, and selfless love. He stands as a shining witness to the Gospel values, reminding us to remain steadfast in our commitment to God and to tirelessly serve others, even in the face of adversity. May his life continue to inspire and guide us in our own journey of faith.
