Birth: February 7, 1907
Death: August 29, 1936
Blessed Constantino Fernández Álvarez, also known as Constantino of Valencia, was born on 7 February 1907 in La Vecilla, León, Spain. He entered the Dominican Order and made his religious profession on 8 July 1923. After years of dedicated study and preparation, he was ordained as a priest on 10 November 1929.
Constantino’s deep love for theology and knowledge led him to pursue a doctorate in theology at the prestigious Angelicum in Rome, Italy. During his time there, he not only excelled in his studies but also embraced the opportunity to teach others. His dedication and competence as a scholar earned him recognition and respect.
Upon completing his studies, Constantino returned to his homeland, Valencia, Spain. Despite the tumultuous times of the Spanish Civil War, he fearlessly continued his work as a teacher, sharing his knowledge and faith with his students. His commitment to educating and guiding young minds through the Dominican charism was a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to the Church.
Sadly, Constantino's life was abruptly cut short during the Spanish Civil War. On 29 August 1936, in Quart de Poblet, L’Horta, Valencia, he became a martyr for his Catholic faith. It is believed that he was executed due to his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs.
The heroic witness of Constantino's life and the circumstances of his death did not go unnoticed. His virtuous existence and martyrdom were recognized by the Church, and on 20 December 1999, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable. Then, on 11 March 2001, Constantino Fernández Álvarez was beatified by the same pontiff, further affirming his sainthood.
Although no specific representation is given for Blessed Constantino, as a Dominican priest and scholar, he could be depicted in traditional Dominican attire, holding a book or a crucifix, symbolizing his commitment to both intellectual pursuits and the Catholic faith.
The feast day of Blessed Constantino Fernández Álvarez is celebrated on 29 August each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. His life of faith, dedication to teaching, and courageous witness continue to inspire Catholics around the world.
