Blessed Constantine of Orval, also known as Constantin or Constantino, was a renowned Cistercian monk and a spiritual student of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. His life was marked by his dedication to the Cistercian Order and his significant contributions in the establishment of numerous Cistercian abbeys.
Born in an unknown year, Constantine's early life remains a mystery. However, his immense spiritual hunger led him to become a devoted follower of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most influential figures in Cistercian monasticism.
In 1118, Constantine, along with Abbot Roger and several brother monks, played a crucial role in the foundation of the Cistercian abbey called the Three Fountains. Situated in the diocese of Châlons-en-Champagne, France, this abbey became the very first daughter house of Clairvaux. Shortly after its establishment, Constantine was appointed as the prior of this newly-founded abbey.
Constantine's dedication to the Cistercian Order and his commitment to the ideals of monastic life did not end with the Three Fountains. In 1132, he led a group of monks to the Notre-Dame d’Orval Abbey near Villers-devant-Orval, Belgium. Here, Constantine and his fellow monks provided support and guidance to the Augustinian community, helping them transition into Cistercians. As a result, Constantine himself was appointed as the first abbot of the newly-formed Orval Abbey.
As abbot, Constantine of Orval guided his community with wisdom and love. He promoted the Cistercian values of prayer, contemplation, and manual labor, setting an example for his brethren. Under his leadership, the Orval Abbey flourished as a center of spiritual growth and monastic discipline.
During his abbatial service, Constantine imparted his wisdom and the teachings of Saint Bernard to his monks, shaping the spirituality of the community. His dedication to the reform of monastic life influenced not only the Orval Abbey but also many other monastic houses throughout Belgium and beyond.
Blessed Constantine of Orval remained faithful to his role as abbot until his passing in 1145. At the Notre-Dame d’Orval Abbey, he peacefully yielded to natural causes, undeterred by the demands and challenges of his holy life.
Although Constantine of Orval's representation is unknown, his impact on the Cistercian Order can hardly be overstated. He devoted himself to the establishment and growth of Cistercian abbeys, spreading the ideals of monastic life and spirituality. His life serves as a testament to the transformative power of faith and prayer, and he continues to inspire many in their spiritual journeys.
The Church has not officially declared blessed Constantine of Orval as a saint or provided a specific date for his veneration or beatification. However, his memory and example are cherished by those who value the rich history and spirituality of the Cistercian tradition. May his legacy live on, inspiring generations of seekers of God's presence and love.
