Biography

Blessed Conrad of Toul, also known as Conrad II of Tübingen or Conrad Probus, was born around 1220 in Tübingen, Wurttemberg, in modern Germany. In 1245, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor and began his journey as a faithful servant of God. During this time, he formed a close bond with another Franciscan and future Pope, Nicholas III, who would play a significant role in Conrad's spiritual development.

Conrad embarked on several missions under the guidance of Pope Nicholas III, gaining valuable experience and deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith. In recognition of his dedication and exemplary character, Conrad was chosen to become the bishop of Toul, Lorraine, in modern-day France, on October 4, 1279.

As bishop of Toul, Conrad faced a period of political unrest and turmoil. He courageously defended the rights of the Church and his diocese against the civil burghers and politicians who sought to undermine its authority. His unwavering commitment to his faith and the people he served earned him admiration and respect among both clergy and laypeople.

One of Conrad's notable contributions as bishop was his promotion of devotion to Notre-Dame-on-pied-d’argent, also known as Our Lady of the Silver Foot. This devotion originated from an apparition miracle in which the Blessed Virgin Mary warned a parishioner of an impending act of treachery planned against the city of Toul. Conrad, recognizing the significance of this apparition, encouraged the faithful to turn to Our Lady and seek her intercession in times of danger and need.

After serving the diocese of Toul for 16 years, Conrad made the decision to retire from his bishopric in 1295. However, far from seeking a life of ease, he continued to lead a prayerful and contemplative existence as a Franciscan friar. Conrad's retirement years were marked by his unwavering devotion to God and his ongoing commitment to his Franciscan vows.

Blessed Conrad of Toul peacefully passed away on May 2, 1297, in Konstanz, Germany, due to natural causes. His life of faithful service and his unwavering defense of the Church's rights left a lasting impact on the people of Toul and beyond.

Although not yet formally venerated or beatified, Conrad's life and work continue to inspire and guide those who seek to live a life of devotion and service to God. His example stands as a testament to the power of faith, prayer, and unwavering commitment to God's calling.
