Biography

Blessed Conrad of Hesse, also known as Conrad of Herlesheim, Conrad of Haina, Corrado, or Konrad, was born around the year 1200 in Herlesheim, Upper Hesse, Germany. His father, who shared the same name, tragically passed away in a shipwreck before the young Conrad was born.

Conrad displayed an innate devotion to the religious life from an early age, and as he grew older, he felt a calling to join the Cistercian order. At the age of approximately 20, he entered the Cistercian monastery in Haina, Germany, where he embarked on his path towards holiness.

Throughout his years as a monk, Conrad diligently pursued knowledge and education, cultivating an impressive intellect. He was known for his deep piety and commitment to prayer, spending countless hours in communion with God.

Conrad's dedication did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually ordained a priest. He served the monastery as sacristan, responsible for the maintenance of the liturgical vessels and vestments, and later as cellar-master, overseeing the provisions and resources of the community.

For a remarkable period of 16 years, Conrad faithfully carried out his duties within the monastery, diligently attending to the needs of his fellow monks and contributing to the spiritual life of the community. His selfless service and steadfast devotion to God earned him deep respect among his peers.

As Conrad advanced in age, he longed for a more secluded life of prayer and contemplation. In the twilight years of his life, he made the decision to retire from all his responsibilities within the monastery in order to dedicate himself entirely to a prayerful existence.

Living in isolation, Conrad's days were filled with deep reflection and fervent intercession for the world. In his solitude, he found solace in seeking union with God and offering himself as an instrument of divine grace.

Blessed Conrad of Hesse passed away on August 3, 1270, peacefully embracing his natural end. Although he may not have been officially recognized with a feast day, he remains a model of holiness and an inspiration to many who seek a life of profound devotion and prayer.
