Biography

Blessed Colomba Matylda Gabriel, also known as Janina Matylda Gabriel, was born on 3 May 1858 in Ivano-Frankivsk, Poland (now in Ukraine). Born into a wealthy Polish noble family, Janina pursued education and eventually became a teacher. She began her teaching career in public schools and later transitioned to schools operated by the Benedictines.

Feeling a strong calling to religious life, Janina embraced her vocation and entered the Benedictine community as a nun. On 20 August 1882, she took the name Colomba and made her profession. She dedicated herself to a life of prayer, piety, and service to God and others.

Colomba's leadership qualities did not go unnoticed, and she was appointed as the abbess of a Benedictine house in Lviv, Ukraine. However, conflicts with some of the sisters in the community led her to seek a different path. In 1900, Colomba relocated to Rome, Italy, where she found a renewed sense of purpose.

During her time in Italy, Colomba initially joined the monastery in Subiaco. In 1902, she returned to Rome and began an impactful ministry aimed at supporting poor young people. Recognizing the dire conditions faced by homeless young women and impoverished workers, she founded the Benedettine di Caritá (Benedictine Sisters of Charity) in 1908.

The Benedettine di Caritá was an institute dedicated to providing housing and family-style support to those in need. Under Colomba's guidance, the Sisters established 118 houses throughout Italy, offering shelter, sustenance, and spiritual guidance to countless individuals. The Sisters' mission was rooted in their belief that every person, irrespective of their circumstances, deserves love, care, and opportunities for a better life.

Blessed Colomba Matylda Gabriel's tireless efforts to alleviate the suffering of the marginalized and vulnerable were recognized by Pope John Paul II. On 10 July 1990, she was venerated by the Pope, with a decree affirming her heroic virtues. Subsequently, on 16 May 1993, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II, acknowledging her sanctity and the holiness of her life.

Colomba passed away on 24 September 1926 in Rome, Italy, from natural causes. Her legacy as a compassionate and selfless servant of God continues to inspire and guide the Benedictine Sisters of Charity as they carry forth their mission of love and care for those in need.
