Biography

Blessed Claudio Granzotto, also known as Claudius Granzotto and Riccardo Granzotto, was born on 23 August 1900, in San Lucia di Piave, Treviso, Italy. He came from a peasant farming family and was the youngest of nine children. Tragically, his father passed away when Claudio was only nine years old, leaving the family to face challenging circumstances.

At the age of 15, Claudio was drafted into the Italian army and served for three years. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for sculpting and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Italy. His dedication and artistic talent were evident in his studies, and he graduated with honors in 1929.

In 1933, Claudio took a bold step and professed himself as a brother of the Order of Friars Minor. He dedicated his life to prayer, finding solace and satisfaction in deepening his spiritual connection with God. Claudio had a profound commitment to serving others, particularly the less fortunate. He devoted his time and efforts to working with the poor, offering them compassion, support, and hope.

Alongside his vocation as a religious brother, Claudio continued to pursue his passion for art. His sculptures reflected not only his technical skill but also his profound spirituality. Through his artistic creations, Claudio aimed to inspire others and convey the beauty and depth of his faith.

Despite his acts of goodness and unwavering faith, Claudio's life was not without trials. He encountered numerous difficulties and challenges along his spiritual journey. Nevertheless, his faith remained steadfast, and he sought guidance and strength through prayer.

On 15 August 1947, Blessed Claudio Granzotto passed away in Padua, Italy, due to a brain tumor. His life was cut short, but his impact and legacy lived on through his works of art, his devotion to the impoverished, and the inspiration he provided to all who knew him.

Recognizing his exceptional virtues, Pope John Paul II declared Claudio Granzotto as Venerable on 7 September 1989. Later, on 20 November 1994, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome, Italy, acknowledging his exemplary life and holiness. Blessed Claudio Granzotto's feast day is celebrated on 15 August, a day that holds great significance in the Catholic calendar.
