Blessed Ciriaco Olarte Pérez De Mendiguren was a Redemptorist priest in the diocese of Cuenca, Spain during the early 20th century. He was born on 8 February 1893 in Gomecha, Vitoria, Spain. Despite being from a humble background, Ciriaco displayed a great devotion to his faith from an early age.
After completing his studies, Ciriaco entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. He was ordained a priest and began his pastoral work, focusing primarily on preaching missions and retreats. Ciriaco was known for his commitment to social justice and his efforts to proclaim the message of God's mercy and redemption to all people.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Ciriaco, along with many other priests and religious individuals, became a target of persecution due to his unwavering faith. On 31 July 1936, Ciriaco was martyred for his commitment to Christ and his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His martyrdom was a testament to his steadfastness in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to his vocation.
Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, Ciriaco's memory and reputation as a martyr of the Catholic Church continued to inspire many faithful. His cause for sainthood was officially recognized, and on 13 October 2013, Pope Benedict XVI raised him to the honor of beatification. This step acknowledged Ciriaco's heroic virtue and the sacrifice he made for his faith.
