Feast Day: September 17
Death: September 17, 1479
Blessed Cherubino Testa, also known as Cherubino of Avigliana, or Cherubim, was born in Avigliana, Turin, Italy, in the year 1451. He was born into the Italian nobility but was early drawn to a life of religious devotion. At the age of 20, Cherubino joined the Augustinian Hermits, a religious order known for their commitment to poverty, chastity, and obedience.
After joining the Augustinian Hermits, Cherubino dedicated himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to others. His obedience to the Rule of his Order was exemplary, and he became known for his humility and steadfast commitment to his vocation.
In early 1479, Cherubino was ordained a priest, receiving the sacrament of Holy Orders. His ordination further deepened his devotion to the Passion of Christ, and he became known for his intense love and contemplation of the sufferings of Jesus on the cross. As a representation of his spirituality, Cherubino is often depicted as a cleric contemplating a crucifix and either holding a lily or with one sprouting from his heart.
On September 17, 1479, at the Augustinian convent in Avigliana, Cherubino breathed his last breath, passing away peacefully from natural causes. According to legend, as he departed this earthly life, the bells of the convent church began to ring on their own, celebrating the passing of Cherubino's soul into heaven. His relics were enshrined in the parish church of Santi Giovanni e Pietro in Avigliana, where they are venerated by the faithful.
Blessed Cherubino Testa's devotion and piety were recognized and honored by the Catholic Church. He was beatified on September 21, 1865, by Pope Pius IX, who confirmed his cultus, a recognition of his sanctity and the legitimacy of his veneration. Cherubino's feast days are celebrated on September 17 and December 16 by the Augustinian Order.
As a beloved figure in the Catholic Church, Blessed Cherubino Testa continues to inspire the faithful with his example of obedience, devotion to the Passion, and commitment to a life of prayer and service. His life serves as a reminder of the call to holiness for all believers and the power of faith and love in the journey towards union with God.
