Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon, also known as Carlo Renato Collas du Bignon, was born on August 25, 1743, in Mayenne, France. He dedicated his life to serving God as a priest in the Society of Saint Sulpice, a community of priests focused on seminary formation and education.
Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon held the position of Superior at the minor seminary of Bourges, France. He was known for his dedication to his duties and his commitment to educating young men in their path towards priesthood. He played a crucial role in molding the future clergy of the Catholic Church through his guidance, mentorship, and spiritual formation.
During the tumultuous era of the French Revolution, anti-Christian sentiments ran high, leading to widespread persecutions against Catholics. Sadly, Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon became a victim of this persecution, eventually meeting his martyrdom.
He was one of the Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort, a group of priests and religious individuals who were imprisoned aboard prison ships as a consequence of their faith. Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon died on June 3, 1794, onboard the prison ship Deux-Associés, which was docked off the shores of Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France.
The conditions aboard these prison ships were harsh, and the prisoners often faced abuse, neglect, and unsanitary living conditions. Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon, too, suffered from infected open sores, which eventually led to his death. His steadfast faith and unwavering commitment to God remained with him until the end.
Recognizing his sacrifice and martyrdom, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on July 2, 1994, through a decree of martyrdom. Later, on October 1, 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed.
Today, his feast day is celebrated on June 3rd, a day to honor his memory and draw inspiration from his courageous witness to the faith. Blessed Charlesrené Collas Du Bignon serves as a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who suffered for their beliefs during the turbulent times of the French Revolution.
