Blessed Charlesarnould Hanus, also known as Charles-Arnold Hanus, was born on 18 October 1723 in Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France. He devoted his life to the service of God, eventually becoming a priest in the diocese of Verdun, France.
Father Hanus held the esteemed position of Dean of the Chapter of Ligny, Meuse, in France, where he served as a spiritual leader and guide to his parishioners. Known for his deep faith and dedication to his ministry, he worked tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Catholic Church in a time when religious fervor faced intense opposition.
During the anti-Catholic persecutions of the French Revolution, Father Hanus became a target of the revolutionaries due to his unwavering commitment to his faith. In the course of these persecutions, he was imprisoned on a ship in the harbor of Rochefort, France. Left to die in harsh conditions, Father Hanus became one of the Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort, a group of courageous individuals who sacrificed their lives for their religious beliefs.
On 28 August 1794, aboard the prison ship Washington in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, France, Father Hanus met his martyrdom. His unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church stood as a powerful testament to his character, even in the face of severe opposition and persecution.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Father Hanus was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 2 July 1994, who issued a decree acknowledging his martyrdom. The beatification of Blessed Charlesarnould Hanus followed on 1 October 1995, also by Pope John Paul II.
