Blessed Charles Decker, also known as Charles Decker, was a Catholic priest and member of the Missionaries of Africa, also called the White Fathers. He was born on 26 December 1924 in Antwerp, Belgium.
Blessed Charles Decker dedicated his life to the service of God and the promotion of inter-faith dialogue and understanding between Christians and Muslims. He made his vows as a member of the Missionaries of Africa on 21 July 1949 and was ordained a priest on 8 April 1950.
After his ordination, Father Charles embarked on a journey of learning and understanding different languages and cultures. He studied Arabic in Tunis and then Berber in Tizi-Ouzou, which helped him communicate effectively with the local population during his missionary work.
In the early years of his priesthood, Father Charles ran a youth hostel, where he provided a safe haven for young people and helped them develop their faith. Later, he became the director of the El Kalima Centre in Brussels, Belgium. This center was dedicated to inter-faith dialogue, education, and documentation between Christians and Muslims.
In 1982, Father Charles was sent to Yemen to continue his missionary work. He served there until 1987, building relationships with the local community and working towards fostering understanding and respect among different religious groups.
After his time in Yemen, Father Charles returned to Algeria, where he served as the priest of the parish of Our Lady of Africa. He lived among the Algerian people and worked tirelessly to promote peace and harmony in a country troubled by conflicts.
Tragically, Blessed Charles Decker's life was cut short on 27 December 1994, the day after his 70th birthday, when he was murdered by Islamic forces while preparing for Mass. His dedication to his faith and his tireless efforts for inter-faith dialogue and understanding earned him the status of a martyr.
On 26 January 2018, Pope Francis venerated Blessed Charles Decker by decreeing his martyrdom. Later, on 8 December 2018, he was beatified by Pope Francis, recognizing his sanctity and sacrifice for the Church.
Blessed Charles Decker's life and martyrdom stand as a powerful testament to the importance of inter-faith dialogue, peace, and understanding among different religious communities. His legacy continues to inspire and challenge people to strive for unity and mutual respect in a world often divided by faith.
