Biography

Blessed Ceferino Jimenezmalla, also known as El Pele, Zefferino Giménez Malla, or Zefyrinus Giménez Malla, was a lifelong layman and a prominent figure in the Catholic Church. Born in 1861 in Benavent de Segria, Lérida Province, Catalonia, Spain, Ceferino had little formal education and was possibly illiterate. However, his natural intelligence shone through, and he was revered for his love of nature.

Ceferino embarked on his spiritual journey as an adult, receiving the Sacrament of Baptism into the Catholic Church. In 1912, at the age of 51, he married Teresa Jimenez Castro and became an adoptive father to his niece, Pepita. Around 1920, Ceferino ventured into the mule-trading business, which proved to be highly successful, allowing him to settle in the town of Barbastro as a prosperous businessman.

Tragedy struck in 1922 when Ceferino's beloved wife passed away, leaving him a widower. Despite this loss, Ceferino's unwavering faith and commitment to God led him to serve his community even more passionately. He served as a city councilman in Barbastro and took on various roles within the Church, including being a catechist, Eucharistic minister, choir director, and rosary leader. Ceferino's deep piety and holiness earned him a reputation as a remarkable individual, causing people to conduct themselves with utmost reverence when in his presence. His wisdom and spirituality prompted his appointment as an advisor to his bishop.

In 1926, Ceferino became a Dominican tertiary, further solidifying his dedication to his faith and his desire to live a life of service to others. Being of Gitano descent, a Spanish Gypsy, Ceferino actively worked towards improving relations between the Gypsies and non-Gypsies, fostering understanding, acceptance, and unity within society.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Ceferino selflessly risked his life to protect and shelter priests who were being hunted down and persecuted. Unfortunately, he was ultimately captured by the authorities due to his unwavering commitment to his faith and his actions aiding the priests. Offered his freedom if he renounced his beliefs and discarded his rosary, Ceferino courageously declined the tempting offer. In August 1936, he was executed by a firing squad in the cemetery of Barbastro, Spain. Initially buried in an unmarked grave, his remains were later exhumed and re-interred next to his wife after the war.

Blessed Ceferino Jimenezmalla's unmatched determination and unwavering faith in the face of persecution and adversity led to his recognition as a martyr. His steadfast devotion to the Catholic Church, his commitment to the Gitano community, and his acts of selflessness and bravery make him a celebrated figure in the history of Catholicism. Ceferino's martyrdom and his virtuous life were acknowledged and venerated by Pope John Paul II, who declared him blessed on May 4, 1997, becoming the first Romani to be beatified by the Catholic Church. His feast day is observed on August 2, allowing believers to honor and draw inspiration from his enduring legacy.
