Biography

Blessed Cecilio Manrique Arnáiz, also known as Brother Cirilo Pedro, was a prominent figure in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle. Born on 1 February 1909 in Monasterio de Rodillo, Burgos, Spain, he dedicated his life to the service of God and the education of young people.

From an early age, Cecilio Manrique Arnáiz exhibited a deep sense of devotion and piety. Recognizing his vocation, he joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious order focused on providing education to the poor. As a member of this congregation, he embraced the charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle and committed himself to the mission of Christian education.

However, Cecilio's life was tragically cut short during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a tumultuous period in Spain's history marked by violence and political tension. On 3 November 1936, he was martyred in Barcelona, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his faith. His martyrdom was a result of religious persecution that occurred during this period, with many religious individuals and communities targeted and executed.

The heroic death of Blessed Cecilio Manrique Arnáiz became a powerful testament to his unwavering faith and devotion to God. Recognizing his virtuous life and martyrdom, he was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 22 June 2004, who issued a decree acknowledging his martyrdom. This act of recognition allowed for his beatification to take place on 28 October 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI.

Blessed Cecilio Manrique Arnáiz's life continues to inspire and serve as a model of faith and dedication. His commitment to the Lasallian mission of education for the poor, even in the face of persecution, highlights his selflessness and deep love for God and his fellow human beings.
