Blessed Cecilia Butsi, also known as Sesilia Butsi, was born on 16th December 1924 in Ban Songkhon, Mukdahan, Thailand. She was the beloved daughter of Amato Sinuen and Agatha Thep. Cecilia's early life was marked by her deep devotion to her Catholic faith and her unwavering commitment to serving others.
At a young age, Cecilia began working in the kitchen of a Catholic mission in the archdiocese of Thare and Nonseng, Thailand. Despite living in a time of intense Christian persecution, she brought immense joy and courage to the mission, inspiring all those around her with her unwavering faith and dedication to her work.
The anti-Christian persecutions in Thailand escalated following the French departure from the country. On 26th December 1940, Cecilia Butsi, along with many other Christians, became a victim of this oppressive regime. She was tragically shot and martyred in the cemetery of Ban Songkhon, Mukdahan, on her feast day.
Cecilia's remarkable life of sacrifice and devotion did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. On 1st September 1988, Pope John Paul II declared Cecilia as venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues. A year later, she was beatified by the same pope on 22nd October 1989.
Blessed Cecilia Butsi's life and death serve as a powerful testament to the resilience and faith of oppressed Christians in Thailand during a time of great persecution. She continues to inspire countless believers, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in their faith and devotion, even in the face of adversity.
