Feast Day: December 14
Blessed Castino, also known as Castissimo, was a revered Franciscan friar and missionary in the latter 13th century. Born into a devout Christian family, he was deeply inspired by the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi and felt a strong calling to spread the Franciscan Order into Germany. Alongside his companion, Blessed Cesorio da Spira, Castino embarked on a mission assigned by Saint Francis himself.
Their journey led them to the outskirts of Munich, where Castino took charge of an old chapel dedicated to Saint James. He recognized the potential of this sacred space and converted it into a base for his extensive preaching and evangelization efforts in the surrounding regions. As he fervently preached the gospel, Castino's eloquence and charisma attracted many who sought a life dedicated to God and the Franciscan way of life.
In order to accommodate those who felt a calling to embrace the Franciscan principles of poverty and humility, Castino founded a convent near the chapel. This religious community provided a place of spiritual refuge and training for those who desired to follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis.
As time progressed, the message of the Franciscan Order resonated with the hearts of the people, drawing like-minded individuals who wished to serve God and the poor. When the Poor Clares, an order of contemplative nuns founded by Saint Clare of Assisi, arrived in the area, Castino selflessly turned over the chapel and its adjoining convent to them. This act of selflessness enabled the Poor Clares to further their work in the region and establish a haven for their spiritual contemplation.
Undeterred by the transfer of the original chapel, Castino's dedication to the Franciscan ideals remained unwavering. With a steadfast determination to provide a suitable place for the friars, he went on to establish another convent, ensuring that the friars had a space to live, pray, and carry out their religious duties in service to God and the community.
Throughout his life, Blessed Castino displayed immense humility, unwavering faith, and an unyielding commitment to promoting the message of Saint Francis and the Franciscan way of life. He tirelessly taught and lived the Gospel values, evoking a profound impact on the lives of those who encountered him.
Blessed Castino lived a life marked by simplicity, prayerfulness, and compassionate service to others. He passed away peacefully in 1292, dying of natural causes while still actively engaged in his missionary and pastoral work. Although specific details of his birth, veneration, and beatification are not readily available, the Franciscan Martyrology commemorates him on December 14th, honoring his indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to the Franciscan ideals.
Blessed Castino's life serves as a shining example of selflessness, humility, and devotion to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. His legacy continues to inspire generations of faithful to follow the path of spiritual simplicity, compassion, and service to God and humanity.
