Biography

Blessed Carlos Navarro Miquel, also known as Carlos of the Virgin of the Abandoned, was a devout member of the Piarists order, dedicated to the education and spiritual formation of children. He was born on 11 February 1911 in Torrent, Valencia, Spain.

Carlos entered the novitiate of the Piarists on 11 August 1929, demonstrating his commitment and passion for serving God through teaching. After completing his novitiate, he made his solemn vows on 18 December 1934, solidifying his dedication to the religious life.

Ordained as a priest on 4 August 1935, Carlos embarked on his journey to fulfill his vocation as both a teacher and a servant of God. He was appointed as a teacher in Albacete, Spain, where he diligently imparted his knowledge and faith to the students under his care.

Sadly, during a time of great social and political unrest, Carlos became a victim of the Spanish Civil War, which was characterized by religious persecution. On 22 September 1936, he was mercilessly shot in the street in Torrent, Valencia, Spain, for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith.

The life and martyrdom of Carlos Navarro Miquel were recognized and honored by the Catholic Church. Venerated on 15 December 1994 by Pope John Paul II through a decree of martyrdom, he was subsequently beatified by the same pope on 1 October 1995.

Blessed Carlos Navarro Miquel serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their faith fearlessly and wholeheartedly, particularly in the face of adversity. He is remembered for his deep devotion to the education of young people and his ultimate sacrifice in the defense of his religious beliefs. On his feast day, 22 September, Catholics celebrate his life and seek his intercession for the challenges they face in their journey of faith.
