Death: August 1, 11
Blessed Carlos Díaz Gandía, born on 25 December 1907 in Ontinyent, Valencia, Spain, was a lifelong layman in the archdiocese of Valencia. As a devout Catholic, he was baptized at the age of one day, and his strong faith would guide him throughout his life.
At the young age of 14, Carlos became a member of Youth Catholic Action, an organization dedicated to promoting the Catholic faith among young people. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became the president of the local chapters. Carlos was known for his dedication and passion for catechesis, and he established several "catechist centers" where he would teach every Sunday.
While traveling by foot or bicycle to these centers, Carlos often faced heckling and abuse due to the growing anti-Christian sentiment in the area. However, his love for spreading the Gospel remained unshaken. In one instance, Carlos had to resort to violence to protect his parish priest and spiritual director from a hostile mob. This incident led him to organize faithful members of Catholic Action to patrol churches and convents, safeguarding them from potential harm.
Carlos' commitment to his faith extended beyond his catechetical work. He had a deep devotion to daily Mass and would never miss an opportunity to participate in it. Additionally, he faithfully recited the Rosary each morning, dedicating himself to a life of prayer. His love for Christ manifested in his ministry to the poor, as he selflessly served those in need.
On 3 November 1934, Carlos married Louisa Tomo Perseguar at the parish church of Santa Maria Ontinyent. The couple was blessed with one daughter, demonstrating their commitment to their Catholic family life.
Tragically, Carlos' journey of faith was cut short due to the violent persecution during the Spanish Civil War. On 4 August 1936, at dawn, he was arrested for the "crime" of being an active Christian. Carlos faced persecution and ultimately gave his life as a martyr for his unwavering dedication to his Catholic faith.
In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Blessed Carlos Díaz Gandía was venerated on 18 December 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who decreed his martyrdom. On 11 March 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and his status as a blessed in the Catholic Church.
Blessed Carlos Díaz Gandía's life serves as an inspiring example of unwavering faith, devotion to the Church, and selfless service to others. His courageous acts during a time of hostility towards Christianity exemplify his dedication to the Gospel and his love for Christ until the end of his days. The feast day of Blessed Carlos Díaz Gandía is celebrated on 11 August.
