Biography

Blessed Carles Canyes Santacana, also known as Brother Mar√ßal of Vilafranca De Penedès, was a Franciscan Capuchin friar who was born on 16 April 1917 in Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona, Spain. He dedicated his life to following the teachings of Jesus Christ and serving others through his religious vocation.

Brother Marçal joined the Capuchin Order on 25 July 1933, devoting himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience. However, due to the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, he was unable to make his solemn profession before his life was tragically cut short.

During the Spanish Civil War, Brother Marçal fell victim to the violence perpetrated by Marxist forces. On the night of 20 August 1936, in Pedralbes, Barcelona, Spain, he was brutally murdered for his faith and his commitment to the Catholic Church.

Recognizing his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Pope Francis decreed Blessed Carles Canyes Santacana's veneration on 5 June 2015. Then, on 21 November 2015, Pope Francis beatified him, a significant step towards his canonization as a saint. The beatification ceremony took place at the cathedral of Santa Creu i Santa EulÖlia, Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Throughout his short life, Blessed Carles Canyes Santacana exemplified the values of the Capuchin Order, dedicating himself to prayer, humility, and selfless service to others. His martyrdom serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women of faith during times of turmoil. As a martyr for the Catholic faith, he is revered and celebrated on 20 August each year.
