Blessed César Elexgaray Otazua, also known as Blessed César of Spain, was a lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was martyred during the Spanish Civil War and is venerated for his faith and sacrifice.
César Elexgaray Otazua was born on 25th February 1904 in Anteiglesia, Guip√∫zcoa, Spain. From an early age, he displayed a deep devotion to his Catholic faith and a desire to serve others. Inspired by the Vincentian charism of compassion for the poor and marginalized, César joined the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission.
As a lay brother, César dedicated himself to a life of prayer, manual labor, and service to the community. His humble and selfless nature endeared him to his fellow brothers and those he served. César's gentle spirit and kindness touched the hearts of many, and he was well-respected for his dedication and commitment to his vocation.
Tragically, during the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, religious persecution became rampant. César, along with numerous others who remained faithful to their Catholic beliefs, faced increasing danger and persecution.
On 23rd October 1936, César Elexgaray Otazua met his martyrdom in Vallecas, Madrid, Spain. He willingly gave his life for his faith, refusing to renounce his Catholicism despite the grave threats and violence he encountered. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering faith and loyalty to God.
The heroic virtues of César Elexgaray Otazua were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 23rd March 2017, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom. This recognition paved the way for his beatification, which took place on 11th November 2017. The beatification ceremony was held in Madrid, Spain, at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.
Blessed César Elexgaray Otazua serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the power of faith and the strength to endure even in the face of persecution and adversity. His life and martyrdom bear witness to the profound love for God and devotion to serving others, making him a cherished figure within the Catholic Church.
