Blessed Buenaventura Gabikaetxebarria Gerrikabeitia, also known as Buenaventura of Saint Catherine, was a Trinitarian priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on July 14, 1887, in Ajanguiz, Vizcaya, Spain.

Buenaventura dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church as a member of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity for the Redemption of Captives, also known as the Trinitarians. This religious order was founded with the purpose of ransoming Christian captives held by Muslims during the Middle Ages. It later expanded its mission to include various forms of spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, Buenaventura found himself in the midst of religious persecution. As a Catholic priest, he was targeted by anti-clerical forces due to his commitment to the faith. Despite the dangers he faced, he remained faithful to his calling and the Church.

Tragically, on August 27, 1936, Buenaventura was martyred in Alcázar de San Juan, Ciudad Real, Spain. His unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his beliefs led to his untimely death. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his deep devotion to God and his commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis declared him blessed during a beatification ceremony, honoring his life and witness as a martyr.

Blessed Buenaventura Gabikaetxebarria Gerrikabeitia is remembered for his courage, selflessness, and steadfast faith in the face of adversity. His life serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who have laid down their lives for the sake of their faith.
